Starting a business has many expenses. One that is not often thought of is the flooring. For many new businesses, finding the right durable and affordable commercial flooring is key. Although there are many options, depending on the type of business, certain flooring materials may be better suited than others. To help you find the right flooring material for your business, we’ve laid out some of the pros and cons of the most common durable and affordable options.
Polished/Painted/Stained Concrete
Although this may seem like the best and cheapest option, it isn’t always. If you are in a newly constructed space, the concrete may have cracks and other blemishes. That means your flooring company would need to put down a skim coating and then apply the finish you choose.
Pros – Durable, waterproof, virtually maintenance free.
Cons – If the building settles, cracks can appear. Some finishes can be very slippery when wet.
Carpet Tiles
Carpet tiles are another affordable commercial flooring option with many pros and cons. Modular carpet tiles are often a great choice for non-retail businesses.
Pros – Easy to install, one piece can be replaced fairly easily if damaged. And, they are quiet to walk on, comfortable to stand on, and also absorbs sound.
Cons – Not waterproof and spills can leave stains requiring carpet cleaning or replacement. Generally regarded as a higher maintenance flooring material.
Vinyl Composite Tile
Vinyl composite tile has been a go-to affordable commercial flooring option for decades. Newer 100% vinyl products are considered green and can help with LEED building certification points.
Pros – Highly durable and waterproof. One tile or several can be replaced easily when damaged. Low maintenance.
Cons – Tiles corners sometime lift as glue wears off. High-traffic areas will show wear including faded or dull looking tiles.
Laminate Flooring
Commercial grade laminate flooring is considered an affordable commercial flooring option even though it is generally more expensive than the other products covered today. However, it can also be one of the better looking and longer lasting products.
Pros – Low maintenance and durable. Many options for color and style. Some brands are LEED certified and qualify for points.
Cons – Easily water damaged and, when damaged, you need to replace at least one board, if not many in the surrounding area.
