We’ve been asked the question, “What is the best flooring for churches?” by not only church building committees, but also designers and contractors. And the answer is simple – there isn’t one best flooring option. There are many. It depends on not only the church, but the spaces within. Often churches need several different flooring options. In part one of our mini blog series, we covered the three most common flooring options historically: wood, natural stone, and carpet. However, churches undergoing remodels and new construction, often include some of the options we’re covering today.
Luxury Vinyl Flooring
When ranking the best flooring for churches, this one almost always comes out high by our clients. The advantages of luxury vinyl flooring is longer than most including:
- Waterproof (mostly)
- Affordable
- Durable
- Low maintenance
And because it comes in both plank and tile options, it can look like stone, tile or wood. And, there are really very few cons as long as you choose a high-quality product. Although, one con is that it can’t be repaired. If some of the flooring is damaged, you have to replace that section. Also, a quality brand can be on the higher side of the budget. However, it works well in so many spaces including gathering areas, common rooms, offices, and even the worship area making it a great option.
Vinyl Flooring
Traditional vinyl flooring isn’t what we would consider one of the best flooring for churches throughout the entire space. However, it is an option to consider for the bathrooms, the entryway, and any other space that needs a low maintenance, easy to clean floor. Its biggest pro is that it’s among the most affordable flooring options. And, if you chose vinyl tiles, you can replace tiles if they’re damaged. One con of the tile style is that with repeated exposure to water, sometimes the edges curl leading to not only an unsightly floor, but also a safety hazard.
Rubber Flooring
We have installed rubber flooring for many clients, and it is among the most popular options for children’s areas. It’s easy to clean, it is soft, non-slip, and comes in fun colors and patterns. Many people are surprised at how durable it is as well. However, we would not rate this as the best flooring for churches who are choosing only one flooring material. A few cons include its cost and fairly long installation timeline.
What About Tile & Laminate?
With all the other options, tile and laminate aren’t the best flooring options for churches today. Sometimes we still install tile in the bathrooms. We almost never install laminate in worship centers for many reasons including the fact that it isn’t very water resistant.
