Choosing the Best Medical Center Flooring – Part 1

flooring at a medical center

The best medical center flooring is going to depend very much on both what you do in your practice and the image you want to portray to your patients. That means the best type of flooring for your medical center may not be the best for someone else. Some practices choose multiple types of flooring; one type of flooring in the waiting areas, something else in the offices, and a third product in the hallways and exam rooms. And whether you choose one or multiple types of flooring for your facility, before you and your flooring installer make a final decision, understanding the pros and cons of various flooring can be helpful.

Tile

Tile, especially wood look tile, has grown in popularity for medical center flooring in upscale practices like cosmetic dermatology and plastic surgery. Porcelain and ceramic tile is durable and easy to clean. It’s also available in countless styles and patterns. All of which are reasons you may want to consider tile for all or part of your practice. On the other hand, it’s not the most comfortable to stand on. If your practitioners stand the majority of the day while seeing patients, it may not be the best medical center flooring. And, depending on the grout color and size of the grout lines, it may not look clean very long. One other drawback of tile is that it does not absorb sound.

Commercial Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring has long been popular in commercial facilities. It is durable and easy to clean. You’ll find that it is also one of the most affordable options for commercial flooring. Most flooring installers will tell you that its biggest drawback is that it’s not at all waterproof or water resistant. That means if you have an area that’s damaged, you can’t repair it. Commercial laminate flooring may be the best medical center flooring for therapists and similar offices where there are consultations rather than procedures.

Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) continues to grow in popularity in many commercial applications. This is because it can look like wood planks (LVP) or tile (LVT) and quality brands are nearly as waterproof as actual tile. In some installations and locations, it can be repaired by removing the damaged area and replacing it. Most people report that standing on LVF is easier on the legs and back than tile. It is also quieter than laminate. However, there are reasons that LVF isn’t the best medical center flooring. The top one being that it’s not as durable as some other materials. Even commercially rated LVF will only last about 10 years. Some flooring installers also point out that between the planks or tiles the cracks allow water to get beneath the flooring leading to eventual damage.
